The concept of contact lenses was first contrived in 1887 by Adolf Fick. Since Fick’s first glass lens a lot has changed but the concept still remains the same. A lens is worn on the cornea to correct the patient’s vision without having all the drawbacks of spectacle wear. Only in the last 20 years have contact lenses have become available in soft materials.
The lens has evolved so much due to technology and material advances that the lenses we supply at Paul Gill Opticians when worn properly are as good for your eye as wearing nothing at all. The human body gets oxygen exchange from the lungs, the eye gets its gas exchange through the surface of the cornea.
